Council has a position available in our Waste and Resource Management team.

The successful applicant will work on a permanent part-time basis, generally 63 hours per fortnight but can be up to 76 hours per fortnight in a roster pattern on day shift only. The hours of work pattern are varied across two locations (Warrens Hill and Halifax). Full training will be provided, and you will have the opportunity to learn about the dynamic operations of the circular economy from the frontline.
Wages: Level 3 Local Government Award (Stream B), base $44,107pa (plus weekend and public holidays as worked).
Purpose of Role

The Resource Recovery Facility Attendant is an integral member of the waste services team, operating across multiple areas of Council’s landfill and resource recovery operations, including the weighbridge, metals area, green waste area, landfill, and transfer skips area at the Warrens Hill Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre and Halifax Resource Recovery Centre.
What you will do

The successful applicant will:
  • Provide customer service by answering any waste enquiries;
  • Conduct resource recovery activities including sorting of waste, metals and materials at disposal areas;
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the role of waste management within a local government context;
  • Operation of plant and equipment to cover of waste on a weekend to manage the disposal of waste materials within the active landfill area as required;
  • Control vehicles and persons, including members of the public to ensure safety;
  • Conduct maintenance activities, such as litter management, leachate monitoring, mowing, and cleaning;
  • Operate and maintain site facilities and equipment, including the gatehouse, weighbridge and transfer station, in a fit and appropriate manner;
  • Manage cash handling for payment and recording of waste transactions in accordance with the relevant legislations;
  • Maintain and record information appropriately within the provided resources;
  • Relieve other employee's when necessary;
  • Work as a team member and communicate with other staff to ensure the effective implementation of waste operations; and
  • Conduct any other works within the operations as directed by the Waste Services Team Leader or Waste and Compliance Services Coordinator.
Basis for selection

We are seeking applicants who, within the context of the role responsibilities detailed above, can respond to the following criteria:
  • Sound communication, interpersonal, literacy and numeracy and customer service skills;
  • Sound computer skills, and experience with the MS Office suite and ability to swiftly acquire the ability to operate weighbridge software with previous knowledge of the system Mandalay highly regarded;
  • Sound knowledge, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of legislative requirement of waste operations within a local government context;
  • Sound knowledge, or the ability to quickly acquire skills in basic cash handling procedures, point of sale computer equipment and EFTPOS terminals; and
  • Demonstrated experience working under limited supervision and contributing to WHS and environmental protection requirements.
Mandatory/Special Conditions/Other requirements

Whilst not mandatory, previous experience or possession of the following will be highly regarded:
  • Previous experience in landfill, recycling operations and maintenance
  • Hazardous material awareness in a waste environment;
  • Current, or the ability to acquire, font end loader ticket;
  • Current, or ability to acquire, Dozer ticket;
  • Current, or willingness to obtain, construction white card;
  • Construction Industry Induction (White Card);
  • Hepatitis A and B and tetanus vaccination or willing to have, and
  • License - Excavator ticket.
The following mandatory requirements, special conditions and/or other requirements apply to this role:
  • The incumbent will be required to attain Hepatitis A/B and Tetanus vaccinations.
